Situated in the Dominican Republic’s Parque Nacional de Este, Isla Saona is considered one of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean. Located off the coast of the main island near the town of La Romana, Isla Saona makes for an ideal day trip from Punta Cana and other resorts in the east.

Isla Saona is an elongated island, with a length of about 15 miles and width of just 4. It is nearly completely flat, with the exception of a 130-foot cliff on the northeastern coast. The whole island has a human population of just 500 souls, but it is home to many special of animals, birds, fish, and plants. Among the 112 species of birds seen on Isla Saona, eight are found only on the island, and another eleven only in the area.

The island really is a place of unique beauty, with seemingly endless white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, coral reefs, a large natural inland swimming spot, and swaying palm trees. It was made famous as the backdrop for the movie The Blue Lagoon, and remains as idyllic as when a young Brooke Shields wandered its beaches. Definitely worth a visit.
